How to get half an egg? Life saving Hack.

Do you find that recipes make too much? Well why not halve the recipe, it’s straightforward! Until it comes to eggs. Half an egg! How do you halve an egg? In truth it is obvious but a bit of a head scratcher when you first think about it.

Half an egg, no problem

Two easy methods are available weight or volume. Both methods break the egg into a container and divide the contents by either volume or weight.

Half an egg by weight method

  • You will need a set of scales and two containers
  • Place a container on a set of scales and set the reading to zero.
  • Crack the egg into the container and get the weight of the contents of the eggs
  • Whisk the egg with a fork or whisk to incorporate the white and the yoke. The aim is to ensure we get an even distribution of the white and yoke. Plus it makes it easier to divide the contents.
  • Tip approximately half the contents of the container into another container and weight the original container. Continue to add more, or return some of the egg until you have half the weight of the egg left in the original container.

Half an egg by volume method

  • You will need two containers. Ideally with volume measurements.
  • Break the egg into one container
  • Whisk the egg with a fork or whisk to incorporate the white and the yoke. The aim is to ensure we get an even distribution of the white and yoke.
Be careful not to get too many bubbles on the surface.
  • Transfer the contents between the two containers until you have equal portions in each.

Which is better? Well personally I prefer the weight method simply as I know I am getting half an egg. Why? Good question and again is obvious when you stop and think. It comes down to the fact that to make it easier to get equal portions using you beat the egg, and here is the methods achilles heal. When you beat an egg, if you are too vigorous you end up with a foam on top. Can you see the problem? Yep, the foam makes it hard to get an accurate measurement of the volume.

Half a yoke

Straightforward. Seperate the yoke from the white. Then choose which method you want to use. Except this time just put the yoke in the container and follow the steps in the method.

Half the white of an egg

Exactly the same for half a yoke but this time we place the white in the container and go from there.
